Water: It's Good Stuff

The RV lifestyle offers unparalleled freedom, allowing regular people to explore the open road and discover new destinations at their own pace. However, living in a recreational vehicle comes with its unique set of challenges, one of the most significant being water management. With limited water storage and the necessity to conserve this precious resource, RVers must adopt strategies to minimize water usage without compromising their comfort. I have scoured the internet for you to make this list some of which I practice often, some I haven't tried. Let's chat about various methods to reduce water consumption while living the RV lifestyle.

Understanding Water Usage in an RV

Before diving into conservation strategies, it’s essential to understand how water is used in an RV. Typically, water is consumed in the following ways:

  1. Showers: One of the largest consumers of water in an RV.

  2. Toilets: Depending on the type of toilet, water usage can vary significantly.

  3. Cooking and Drinking: Essential daily activities that require clean water. I cook with my fresh tank but I only drink from refillable, large bottles of water. My water isn't stinky or anything, but I have some space under my table, and it allows me to better watch how much water I drink.

  4. Dishwashing: Cleaning up after meals can use a considerable amount of water. I have a small basin that I fill for the soak and then do a quick spray nozzle rinse.

  5. Laundry: For those with washing machines in their RVs, this can be another significant source of water consumption.

Strategies for Reducing Water Consumption

1. Efficient Showering

Navy Showers: The concept of a Navy shower involves turning off the water while soaping up and only turning it on to rinse off. This method can save gallons of water each time you shower. When I was in the Navy, the opposite was called a "Hollywood shower." Pretty funny at the time.

Low-Flow Showerheads: Installing a low-flow showerhead can significantly reduce the amount of water used without sacrificing the quality of your shower. These showerheads mix air with water, providing strong water pressure while using less water.

Shower Timers: Use a timer to keep your showers short. Aim for showers that are five minutes or less. Many RVers find that they can stay clean and fresh with just a couple of minutes of water running time. And I hate to say it, but investing in some quality wipes can give you a fresh feeling without a daily shower. My wipes are all natural and are burnable.

2. Toilet Water Conservation

Composting Toilets: One of the most effective ways to reduce water usage is by installing a composting toilet. These toilets use no water at all and can be a sustainable option for long-term RV living.

Dual-Flush Toilets: If a composting toilet isn’t an option, consider a dual-flush toilet. These toilets have two flush options: one for liquid waste and a higher volume flush for solid waste, allowing you to use less water when possible.

Manual Flush Control: Some RV toilets allow you to control the amount of water used per flush manually. By being mindful and only using the minimum amount necessary, you can save a considerable amount of water. Liquid waste only needs a minimal spray, and you can stay off bad smells by using a quick spray cleaner.

3. Cooking and Drinking Water

Water Filters: Invest in a good quality water filter for your drinking water. This can allow you to refill from various sources without worrying about water quality, reducing the need for bottled water. I have not tried this, so please be safe when using other than certified potable water sources.

Efficient Cooking Practices: Use one pot meals and minimize the use of multiple pots and pans. This not only reduces the amount of water needed for cooking but also makes cleanup easier and less water intensive. My cast iron pan is easily cleaned by leaving in my cooking fire for a bit allowing the food to burn off.

Reuse Water: When boiling pasta or vegetables, consider using the leftover water to water plants or even for preliminary dishwashing. This way, water is used twice before being discarded.

4. Dishwashing Techniques

Two-Basin Method: Use one basin for soapy water and another for rinsing. This method can save a significant amount of water compared to letting the water run continuously while washing dishes.

Scraping and Wiping: Before washing, scrape off food residues and wipe dishes with a paper towel or cloth. This reduces the amount of water needed for washing.

Dishwashing Sprayers: Installing a low-flow dishwashing sprayer can help you use less water while still effectively cleaning your dishes.

5. Laundry Solutions

Public Laundromats: Using public laundromats can significantly reduce the water used in your RV. Many RV parks have on-site laundry facilities that are more water-efficient than personal washing machines. It's also nice to sit in some air-conditioned laundry mat and just chill around people for a while.

Portable Washing Machines: If you prefer to do laundry in your RV, consider a portable washing machine designed for RVs. These machines are typically more water-efficient and use less electricity than standard home units. I do not have a washer in my RV, but some fancier folks do. (no hate)

Efficient Laundry Practices: Wash only full loads and use the shortest appropriate cycle for the clothes being washed. Additionally, consider hand-washing smaller items to save water. I hand wash and dry items such as my work shirt and some pants.

Additional Tips for Water Conservation

Fix Leaks Immediately: Even small leaks can waste a considerable amount of water over time. Regularly check for leaks and fix them promptly. This may mean having to open up your underbelly once in a while to check for dampness. And you should do this regularly anyway in order to check for mold or critters.

Use Water-Saving Products: Products such as aerators for faucets and low-flow fixtures can reduce water usage without compromising functionality.

Plan Ahead: Be mindful of your water consumption, especially if you’re boondocking (camping without hookups). Plan your water use and storage carefully to ensure you don’t run out. If you are just starting out, do a trial run. Empty all of your tanks. Take a shower, then empty your grey water into a bucket. See how much water you have used in one shower, then calculate how many showers you can take per fill.

Monitor Water Levels: Keep an eye on your water tank levels. Many modern RVs have monitoring systems that provide real-time information on water usage and tank levels.

Catch and Reuse Gray Water: In some areas, it’s permissible to use gray water (from sinks and showers) for purposes like flushing toilets or watering plants. Check local regulations and use this practice if allowed.

Practice Mindfulness: Developing a habit of being mindful about water use can make a significant difference. Small actions, such as turning off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving, can add up to substantial savings over time. I use an electric razor in my shower while the water is off. Then my finished shower rinses away the stubble.

Conclusion

Embracing the RV lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to compromise on comfort or sustainability. By implementing these strategies for reducing water consumption, you can enjoy the freedom of the open road while minimizing your environmental impact. Water conservation in an RV is not just about using less water; it’s about using water more efficiently and wisely. With a combination of technology, mindful habits, and practical solutions, you can make your RV adventures more sustainable and enjoyable.

Whether you’re a full-time RVer or a weekend warrior, reducing water consumption should be a priority. Not only does it help preserve a vital resource, but it also enhances your self-sufficiency, allowing you to explore remote locations without the constant need to refill your water tanks. So, as you embark on your next journey, take these water-saving tips to heart and make every drop count. Enjoy your adventures!
